What does George Washington and Aretha Franklin Have In Common ?

There are many keys to becoming great leaders. I will just focus on 5 of them.
1.R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aretha said it best when she sang this great song. If you want people to say your name in the same sentence as Great Leader, than you have to learn to give respect, to everyone. It doesn't matter if the person in your office is just a janitor you have to show the same respect to them as you would the head of a major account you are trying to land. Everyone wants to be valued and everyone loves to be respected if you give it, you will receive it.
2. Keep Good Company
Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.
George Washington
If you want to establish great leadership skills and become a person whom others look to for guidance, you have to keep similar company. Whatever type of person you spend your professional and leisure time with slowly but surely you will adopt some of their principals and thoughts so be sure it is someone you admire.
3. Make Hard Decisions
The following is a brief recount of George Washington and Valley Forge he made the hard decision to not raid nearby houses to get the supplies that his men so desperately needed.
Washington might have been excused, in such a situation, for wondering whether to use his military power to silence his civilian critics. More bedeviling still, Washington mulled the possibility of permitting his soldiers to seize the supplies they desperately needed and Congress lacked the power to purchase. But it is a remarkable fact of American history that Washington turned away from the temptation to overpower or maneuver around the weakness of American civilian government. He resisted so scrupulously, in fact, that thousands of his men starved or froze to death that second winter of the war. While they're suffering and loyalty is justly recognized as the great legacy of Valley Forge to the nation, it is only part of the story.
It is clear that Washington did not want to act like the very force he was trying to overthrow.  What an terrible position he was put in by Congress and his own sensibilities.  How do you stay true to your principles and yet watch men die because of it?
Now your decisions as a business owner probably will not result in life or death. However, how many times have we kept the wrong employee or wrong partner because they were a friend and found them to be were the wrong fit? You have to make hard decisions to be a great leader.
4. Filled with integrity.
I am studying George Washington currently and I am amazed by so many traits that he possessed. At the end of the war his men were exhausted, ill fed, and broke. They became increasingly angry and they wanted to make George Washington King and overthrow the new government they worked so hard to create and defend. A man with poor character would have easily said yes. But this is how George Washington answered those men:
Washington entered and approached Gates and asked to speak.
Washington, looking for the right words, urged patience, and characterized the first address as a document appealing to "passions" rather than "reason and good sense." He quickly found that he was not making progress in reaching his officers. It is at this time that Washington stated that he wanted to read them a letter. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his glasses.
Many were surprised that Washington wore glasses, for they had never before seen him wear them. It was this act, and the statement "Gentlemen, you must pardon me. I have grown gray in your service and now find myself growing blind." This caught the officers of guard, and his statement had verbalized for them their sense of personal sacrifice, of thwarted dignity and honor. Many officers upon seeing this act, wept. All thoughts of internal rebellion and conspiracy, ceased to exist.
My final Key is what I believe all of the other keys in leadership rest upon, humility. In order to be a great leader you must be humble.
5. Humility
When Washington was given command of the Army this is the statement he made:
But lest some unlucky event should happen unfavorable to my reputation, I beg it may be remembered by every gentleman in the room that I this day declare with the utmost sincerity, I do not think myself equal to the command I am honored with.
Washington's formal acceptance of command of the Army (16 June 1775), quoted in The Writings of George Washington : Life of Washington (1837) edited by Jared Sparks, p. 141
Aretha and Washington both had respect in common. Aretha sang a great song regarding the subject and George Washington lived it.
Follow these simple principals and you too can become a great leader!

Would You Like To Know The Key to Getting People To Purchase Your Product?

So here is the age old question, what every salesperson seeks an answer to, how can I get my prospects to buy my product /service?  Are you ready for the great answer?  YOU CAN'T!  Great I'm wasting time reading an article where you tell me I can't make people buy? Not quite. Hear  me out.

 One of the best ways you can get your client to buy your product or service is to know when they are ready to buy.  You see everyone is going to buy something eventually, a tv, marketing class, consulting seminar, a new car etc;

The point is, you need to know when they are ready.  No one buys until they are ready to buy. When is that? Only they know.  The key in sales is to always put yourself in front of your prospect. Send them great newsletters, product offers, what is new and exciting with your company, and when they are ready you may just be selling what they are looking for.  Sales is about relationships. No one is confident buying a product from someone they have no relationship with.  Begin building those relationships and keep your company in front of  your client.  If you offer what they need when they need it, you are sure to get the sale!  Happy relationship building!

Greatest Salesman In the World Via Network Marketing

Today the internet is filled with marketing opportunities. But an important component in being a successful marketer is relationships. Sometimes when we are behind our phones, computers, blackberry's and IPhones that thought can escape our attention. I am marketing to a real living human being.  It is such a simple task to be polite, thank someone, welcome them, and perhaps leave them with a witty quote or phrase. Those small details can make all the difference in the world.  Would you buy from " Hey I have 10 ways you  can put  a book shelf together" or "Wow I noticed you love to read in  your profile,  I do also, I just finished reading Og Mandino's The Greatest Salesman" I am so thankful that I have these instructions on how to put a book shelf together so I have a place for my prized book."  Huge difference.  So remember while the twitter robots are flying and the social bookmarks are sending, and the bloggers are blogging and the linkedIN are networking....there are real people behind those names. Show interest in people don't just be a product pusher and your business will soar.

Another Great Tool For The Small Business Owner Merchant Accounts

If you don't know this already one of the greatest problems facing small business owners is collecting on accounts. Many times businesses are over extended, paid for too much inventory and now they look at you with empty hands.  This can be a very frustrating issue. So What is a business owner to do? Find ways to receive money that will ensure it gets into your account quickly and efficiently.  Recently I had a friend tell me how much more business he did due to accepting credit cards. He said it made it very easy for clients to say,"you have the card so just add ......"  So I began researching because I don't like to be overcharged for anything.  I came across a great deal. A merchant account that beats all of its competitors, great 2.19% rate. Low monthly fee $7.99 , and excellent customer service. Plus they will pay you!  I know it sounds too good to be true but I really do work hard to present you with some great deals and this is no exception. So this is what you do Call my rep her name is    Meagan   1.800.941.6557 ext 2124  in order to get the great rate tell her Lisa Cash Hanson from Blueberry Baboon referred you ..and you are on your way to saving and keeping more of your money!  Good Luck!

Newsletters ,The Perfect Worm For Your Hook

This is one of my favorite photos. I believe it symbolizes the spirit of the entrepreneur. Never quit! Sometimes when you are running your own business there are times when you feel like quitting. Some factors that contribute to those feelings are decreased sales, lack of clientele, etc: Any time I come across a service that I believe would help alleviate your stress and increase your profits as a business owner I want to share it. So here we go. Today I was listening to a conference call  with Jim Palmer, also known as the Newsletter Guru. I'm including his link below. You will find some excellent resources for your business such as newsletter templates, crafting great copy and more.
Of course the first step in this process would be to have a list of potential customers. However if you have the list it's important to know what to do with it. If you have a lake  filled with  fish they're fun to look at, but if you intend to catch one, you better put a worm on the hook and then put the hook in the water. I really enjoyed the tips I received to day. I always like to share information I believe you will find helpful.  So check out Jim Palmer's site below I believe it's the perfect worm for your hook! Have a great day

Great Pay Doesn't Always Mean Great Attitudes.

A common problem with the  lack of productivity  in the workplace is the result of poor attitudes. Many consultants tell the CEO in order to resolve  these issues increase your workers salary. That will lead to  happier employees, which translates to greater productivity.  This is not always the truth. I have also heard  the philosophy that attitudes trickle down from the top  and when a company is experiencing  a conflict within the staff it is a result of upper management  and a flawed  approach. Again , not always the case. If you are interested in my techniques that will guarantee a strong and healthy work environment without increased costs, then call now. My fresh approach will change the atmosphere of your office from spoiled to the sweet aroma of success and harmony.

KISS (Not What You Think)

KISS a common phrase usually associated with Keep It Simple Stupid.  I don't like to call names so I would never use this phrase in that way. I choose to use that phrase this way, Keep It Separate for Success.  What do I mean? You will notice there is a picture of the world . Imagine those  are your hands.  You are an entrepreneur  and a  business owner. You believe your client is potentially the  whole world, a common mistake often made by new business owners. Even though I'm sure you think your product or service is amazing the whole world will not be your client.  You will have to define your market.  Once you have achieved that lets say you have the attention of your "niche" in the world.
It is so important as a business owner to always present a professional presentation. Most of us come from diverse backgrounds . It is good to share your experiences, different industries in which you have achieved success etc;. That said , with social networking at our finger tips...you must keep your business and your personal life separate.  If you have a twitter account even if you have 2,000 or more followers do not mix business and personal tweets. Create an account for each. There are great tools available one which I use is tweetdeck.  You can manage multiple platforms at once.  There is nothing that erodes your clients confidence  quicker than receiving a tweet saying, "my dog ate my sock" or "brushing my teeth".  It makes you appear.......well not very professional. Keep your business accounts related to your business, providing information on services, article of interest etc. Today is Martin Luther King Day. I did tweet a post with his speech. But I find that unity in humanity is the most important topic for a business owner ,so that is acceptable. Remember this phrase KISS , with it's new definition Keep It Separate for Success and I know you will succeed!

Treat Others How You'd Like To Be Treated.

Today's tip: ACT RIGHT! OK that's the shortened version but it's this entire article summed up in that simple phrase. When you are working with others on a project with deadlines and pressures, it can be a challenge. When others are stressed, ill prepared or nervous it can cause tension and strife. Strife promotes anxiety which promotes bad attitudes, short tempers which promotes harsh words. I feel like singing the ankle bones connected to the knee bone the knee bones connected to the...... In any case, as a leader you must avoid the temptation to snap. It is so much easier to get people to corporate with you when you smile, speak calmly, take control of the situation without controlling people. So here are some tips:
Smile
Speak slowly and in a calm tone
Be patient ( you don't know what that person is dealing with at home or in their personal life so be patient)
Always speak respectfully.
Never cuss. ( I can't believe I even have to say this one but I experienced it recently)
If you cuss in front of your employees it shows a complete lack of self control and intelligence in my opinion.
Always be prepared. If you are in control and at ease others will be at ease with you.
Those are some tips for today. People will always be willing to work with you , if you are willing to work with them.

Preparing For a Great Year

Yesterday was a very busy day. I had scheduled professional speakers in 20 minute increments.  The day flew by and I never stopped from the time I arrived until days end.  There were some stress regarding the shoot, technical issues and such but all in all in was a wonderful day.  I am truly grateful to have such talented speakers.  Not only were they "on" performance wise but their attitudes were terrific as well.    In business there are so many choices in companies, products etc;. My philosophy is that life is too short to spend it with people who you don't enjoy.  Regardless of how talented someone is, or number of clients a business has, if they are not enjoyable to work with ...I take my business elsewhere.  If you are in any type of business ultimately you are in service.  When you are serving someone be kind, respectful, professional and prompt. Always remember this phrase I've heard  many times.   Your attitude determines your altitude. If you want to grow to new heights  both professionally and personally , be kind, it pays multiple dividends.

The Climate of Business is Changing

Many people are getting off the corporate ladder. The main reason? They get to the top only to find nothing there. No security , no benefits,  just air. What is the solution? When it comes to the future of small business the climate is definitely changing. The rise of sole proprietorship's and expansion of entrepreneurial education is soaring to new heights. Who are these entrepreneurs? Women, yours truly included, baby boomers, & my favorite term mompreneurs. Many women believe now more than ever we can have it all. The family, happy husbands, children and career, all simultaneously.

If you have a desire to start your own  business your timing is great! There are so many resources to help you.  Of course at Blueberry Baboon start ups is one of our specialties. We look forward to working with  you and get busy creating your dream job, you know the one where you work for yourself!

A Book That Inpired and Helped Me

I'm reading Loral Langemeier's Millionaire Maker, for the second time.  I could go on and on about this book, but I'll just say go to your local library and get it.  Better yet, buy your own copy. I believe you will be encouraged by her book.  She thinks differently than most, probably the reason behind her success.  Even if you don't feel comfortable with everything she suggests I'm sure you will come away with some great ideas.
Enjoy!

So You Want To Start A Business?

So here I am pictured with Chuck Schwab. How did I arrive in this photo with the owner and CEO of one of the largest investment companies in the world? The same way I arrived at every other place in my life, one step at a time. This photo was taken on a gig where I performed and sang for the anniversary of his elite golf club..The Stockton Club. This should never have happened....why? Well because for starters I really couldn't sing (when I was a girl ) just ask my mom. Off pitch and terrible. Secondly I was raised in a middle to low income section of Michigan...again doomed to fail by proxy of my environment. Lastly I'm a college drop out who traveled the road like a gypsy singing in rock bands. " Yes Lisa, but here you are singing at the Stockton Club next to Charles Schwab" ,......one step at a time.
I'm writing this article because as I look back over my long career in music I'm realizing that although not famous ( I laid that dream down for ministry) I've had and still do have, an amazing career in music. All this from a girl who couldn't really sing:) Funny I know. Of course I practiced ,performed in bands throughout the years and learned my craft.
I'm about to embark on a new project. As I do I'm realizing I have much of my Father in me. Not my earthly Father, but my heavenly Father. I often think back to the first day of creation as God stood gazing at the abyss and wonder..What would have happened if God looked at the darkness , instead of saying "light be" he said "Wow it's dark. Whew! What am I going to do. No one's ever done this before. Woah this is really scary !, I'm alone and there is nothing out there......hellooooooooooooo.....(nothing answers back) Jeesh nothing there. what am I gonna do , what will I do?" To me the visual of God trippin is pretty funny yet we're created in HIS image and we trip all the time. " I HAVE A DREAM," we say. Then we flip out when we see all that it takes to accomplish that dream. Present company included. So after studying the many facets of my new endeavor which by the way is designing my new line of children's couture clothes, I've come to a conclusion and here it is.
There are millions of ways to accomplish a single task. Each person has a completely different approach. You can ask 10 different people, you'll receive 10 different answers. Should I pay attention to what I read and learn from those who have blazed the trail before me? Absolutely. Should I follow there every move blindly like sheep? NO, NO, and again NO. I'm a sheep to one man and that's Jesus. That's it. I also have decided I want to be just like my Father. He is the maker of the whole Universes and everything in it. He is Unique. He is Creative. He has thoughts that come from heaven.......so I say "Me too!. Me too! Me too! :) That means He can show me and you whatever your dream may be a unique way and a path paved with wisdom from Heaven to help you achieve your goals. I'll end with this quick tale. I had a dirt bike years ago. I rode with people much more experienced than myself ( of course they had more experience I had none:) But because I didn't know you could end up flying in the air with your legs out behind you, and because I didn't know you couldn't take your bike straight up the hill that it would stall, and because I didn't know that you would slide halfway down a slate rock and slip on gravel.......well I tried things that quite frankly I was too naive to know I couldn't. So this is what I think...sometimes when you hear the naysayers noise and you can see all the obstacles that are standing between you and your dream...you begin to think, " I'll never...I'm not smart enough, I don't have enough money"...."they" say it has to be done like this.....BA LOGNA! Blaze your own trail! Of course learn what you can but sometimes ignorance is bliss. Have a "can do " attitude not a "can't do" attitude and remember this cute story. I've heard this before there are diverse theories surrounding this story but I love in anyway. They say aerodynamically it is physically impossible for the bumble bee to fly. But yet there he flutters flower after flower without even breaking a sweat. Perhaps someone forgot to tell the Bumble Bee he can't fly:) The morale of the story is clear, God is the Dream Giver and He made you. He put His life in you therefore you can make your dreams come true too. Anyone can say you can't. It takes strength and courage to look into the face of obstacles and say I can! Now go make your dream happen. Kick down , step on, move aside, , climb over , around , or through any obstacle that dares to block your way. YOU CAN DO IT!! AND ME TOO :)

Are You a Success if Your Life is a Mess?

There is a pattern that I follow in my own life. "What does it profit a man (or woman) if he gains the whole world yet looses his soul?" Many philosophers have said this statement many ways. No matter which way you spin the phrase it lands the same...it is possible to have everything yet nothing at the same time. If you have a business that is thriving and successful , yet your children don't recognize you when you come through the door...you are not a success. If you drive the most expensive sports cars and are the envy at the boys club yet you come home to a cold bed...again , that is not success.

I walked into a boutique store a while back while doing some research. I went in to learn about my studied topic yet instead spent my time listening to the owner and what he was going through. His wife had left him for another man and he was devastated. They had started this business together but through the pressures, anxieties, and expectations somehow lost their way. Here sat this man with a boutique, merchandise all around him yet his heart was as poor as it could be. I would encourage anyone in business keep your priorities straight. Don't be deceived into thinking "I'm making a better life for my children", "this is so my wife can buy what she wants". The best gift you can give your family is you. If you want to have a successful business than you must also have a strong personal life. Anything that goes on at home or in your heart will transcend into business. So be prosperous, have an amazing business, great deals but don't forget make sure your rich in your personal life as well.
